Block Error Patterns and Throughput Rate on the Digital High-Speed AUTOVON Channel

Abstract

Voice telephone systems, such as AUTOVON, have been used for the transmission of high-speed digital data. In this paper, the performance of AUTOVON circuits in passing 4800 b/s and 9600 b/s digital data using the state- of-the-art Codex 9600 modem is presented. It is demonstrated that the channel provides stable values of block error rate over long periods of time. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the maximum value of link throughput rate occurs at a block length of 9000 bits and that throughput rate is also reasonably constant as a function of time. Finally, a block error channel model is included for use in simulations where block retransmissions must be considered.
