Roll Stabilization Investigation for the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG-7).

Abstract

This investigation provides roll motion predictions and the results of the roll decay model experiments for the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG-7) design hull form with continuous bilge keels. Predictions are also made for various means of stabilizing the roll motion of the FFG-7 using a modified single degree of freedom linear roll theory which recognizes the nonlinear roll damping moment. Stabilization is investigated for the ship fitted with various sizes and arrangements of bilge keels, including bilge keel segments forward and aft of active anti-roll fins, and bilge keels forward of active anti-roll fins. Recommendations are made in each case; however, the results indicate that active anti-roll fins of 5.11 square metres (55 square feet) area with bilge keels forward are sufficient to provide the desired stabilization. Also included in this report is a proposal for the Top Level Requirements for FFG-7 Roll Stabilization, based on the results of this investigation in conjunction with requirements specified by the Navy.
