Susceptibility of Termites to Microbes.
Abstract
This report concerns the biology, ecology and susceptibility of the Formosan subterranean termite Coptotermes formosanus to the insect pathogenic nematode Neoaplectana carpocapsae. The nematode Neoaplectana carpocapsae entered the termite through the mouth or through the anus. And penetration was more frequent than oral. Once in the gut it penetrated the gut wall and entered the hemoceal where it released the bacteria. The termite was killed by a massive septicemia. The nematodes multiplied and emerged from the cadaver. In the laboratory, the pathogen was transferred to a new host but in the field colonies the infection was not transmitted to another host. The same situation obtained with the fungal pathogens, Metarrhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana.
