Resume of the Discussion Concerning the Nutritional Consequences of Infection.

Abstract

The discussion of papers presented during the session on Nutritional Consequences of Infection covered topics which included the changing concepts of 'body wasting' during acute and chronic infections, the effects of fever, reduced dietary intake, gastrointestinal disturbances, and the role of various acute-phase reactant proteins and endogenous mediator substances produced by host cells. Comments were made concerning the response of various enzymes and amino acids during an infectious process. The effect of malnutrition on host immune mechanisms was also addressed.
