Explosion-Bulge Test Performance of Rolled to Extruded HY-80 Weldments.

Abstract

The current submarine design calls for the welding of rolled HY-80 plate sections into T beams which are then formed into circular stiffener rings and welded circumferentially to the pressure hull plating of the submarine. Explosion bulge tests were conducted with composite weldments consisting of rolled HY-80 plate welded to web sections of extruded HY-80 T-shapes. As demonstrated by the results of these tests, the extruded HY-80 is shown to develop approximately equivalent explosion bulge test performance as that of the rolled HY-80. The limited tests, however, suggest that the extruded HY-80 is characterized by greater directionality characteristics than that developed by rolled HY-80.
