Washington Metropolitan Area Water Supply Study. Volume 6. Annex D, Volume 2. Socioeconomic Impact Study of Alternative Water Supply Programs.

Abstract

This Annex presents the socioeconomic impacts of possible water supply systems being considered for the Washington Metropolitan Area (WMA). It describes 13 basic projects as well as five basic programs utilizing a specific combination of projects. Part I develops a statistical overview of the total WMA. Part II of the Annex provides an analysis of socioeconomic trends for each county within the area, and for the District of Columbia. The statistical analysis is supplemented with a description of planning issues and qualitative information obtained from interviews with county planning officials. This is then used as the base case against which the impacts of each project and program are measured. The impacts discussed reflect the effect of the project itself, not of the increased water supply. The impacts are measured with respect to population, employment, personal income, tax base, recreation opportunities, and land use. This Annex does not attempt to derive preuse quantative impacts or to build models for that purpose. (Author)
