Effect of Gamma Rays on Microorganisms and Chemicals in Water, Wastewater, and Sludge.
Abstract
Gamma rays have been found to be effective in destroying certain chemical structures and in killing both pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. A synergistic effect has been discovered when aqueous solutions are either pretreated with chlorine or when air or oxygen are bubbled through the solutions during irradiation. The data indicates that the effectiveness of the irradiation process is dependent on the concentration of solids in the aqueous solution.
