Proof Testing of a Candidate Category 3 Suppressive Shield

Abstract

A prototype structure was designed, fabricated, and tested as a candidate suppressive shield for Category 3 applications. The tests indicate complete containment of secondary fragments from press/pelletizing equipment and blast pressure reductions in the range of 70 to 92% at external close-in locations. The shield did not successfully withstand the required proof test of 560 psi side-on blast overpressure at the wall, due to the ejection of three pieces of 10-gauge perforated steel from the outside layer of the vented panels becoming secondary fragments.
