Adaptation of the SPACETRACK Radar SOI Signature Transmission System to Optical SOI Data.

Abstract

The introduction of passive non-imaging optical sensors into the operational system of the NORAD Space Object Identification (SOI) Center, posed the problem of efficient and accurate transmission of standardized target signature data to the Central Space Defense Center (SC) at Ent AFB, Colo. A signature transmission system is described which is believed compatible with the procedures employed by SDC as of January 1976 for transmisssion of radar signatures from existing SPACETRACK sites. The system uses a base-26 number system utilizing alphabetic characters such that the two data points are conveyed in three alphabetic characters. Details are included on the header, data, and ephemeris lines of the optical SOI signature message, and on the software required to generate these portions message from the particular IBM 1800 data tape standard used at the AFAL Cloudcroft E/O Facility in New Mexico. Sufficient detail is given to allow adaptation to other standard data bases. The program described uses the USAF AUTODIN network for bulk transmission. (Author)
