FFG-7 with Bow Bulwark Deck Wetness Investigation.

Abstract

In order to determine the effectiveness of a bow bulwark on the FFG-7 (Guided Missile Frigate), deck wetness investigations were carried out at various ship speeds and headings, and in several sea states. These long crested fully developed sea states were representative of high Sea State 5, low Sea State 6 and middle Sea State 7 with significant wave heights of approximately 3.78 metres, 4.42 metres and 7.53 metres, respectively. The results were compared to previous experiments on a Patrol Frigate (PF) without a bulwark. It was seen that the bulwark on the FFG-7 effectively eliminated deck wetness in high Sea State 5 and low Sea State 6. Deck wetness did occur in middle Sea State 7 on the FFG-7 in head and bow seas at ship speeds of 20 and 25 knots. Sonar dome emergence was seen to occur on the FFG-7 in high Sea State 5 and low Sea State 6 with full emergence occurring in middle Sea State 7. (Author)
