Thin Film Optical Switch.

Abstract

This program represents an effort to develop a thin film optical switch using integrated optics technology. The switching of the direction of propagation of a two-dimensionally confined optical beam between two-channel waveguides is achieved using an electro-optic phase grating. The waveguiding medium is a Ti-diffused LiNbO3 layer. The coupling of single-mode guides to single-mode guides by mode expansion and compression tapers is an integral part of the switch design.
