Optical Functional Tester: An Improved Design.

Abstract

A redesign of the Optical Functional Tester (OFT) has been completed. The initial unit of the new design has been assembled and operated. Laboratory checkout has shown the versatility of the new design, its ease of operation, and adequate measurement sensitivity when compared to the original OFT. This new unit has been operated both in the forward and backscatter modes. Test data (x-y recorder traces) on surfaces of three different types of laser designator components (laser rods, Pockels cell crystals, and resonator end reflectors) is presented. Recommendations for further application of the unit are given. Potential computerization of the unit is discussed. An estimated cost breakdown for follow-on units is included. (Author)
