National Security, Military Power, and the Role of Force in International Relations.

Abstract

This analytical survey of literature was prepared at the request of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, United States Army. It is based on unclassified publications (friendly and unfriendly) located for the most part on the open shelves of the Army Library, Headquarters, Department of the Army, Pentagon. The 850 abstracts included in this publication were selected from a vast number of books, periodical articles, studies and documents, which in their aggregate reflect on the complexities of National Security, Military Power, and the Role of Force in International Relations. The survey covers a 30- year period from 1946 to 1976, a period which witnessed great shifts in military strategies of nations, and an unorthodox employment or threat of force in the relations between nations. The problems facing the military today are of such magnitude and complexity that there is an obvious need to recapitulate and take a look at the place of power and force in the real world. At this point it is fitting to state that this document is not intended as a syllabus to a course of study or a textbook on military science. The main objective is to inform and arouse curiosity through a collection of diversified literature under one cover. Accordingly, some of the selected items, are neither definitive nor exhaustive in their totality but are included primarily because certain parts and chapters contain stimulating and provocative ideas, as well as constructive, relevant information. No effort was made to delete or exclude references by reasons of thier controversial nature. On the other hand, inclusion of entries does not represent an official endorsement of the views expressed.
