An Analysis of the Wool Fiber and Fabric Availability in the United States.

Abstract

An analysis was made of the production capability of wool fibers in the United States and other countries, and the fabric production currently available in the United States. The purpose of the analysis was to determine whether sufficient quantities of wool fiber and looms to convert the fiber to fabric for Air Force distinctive uniforms will be available in the next five - ten years. From the data provided by both government and non-government agencies, it is evident that quantities of apparel wool produced annually is decreasing at a rate of about 5% per year. Looms to convert this fiber to woolen and worsted fabrics (weather all-wool or blended with synthetic fibers) are also decreasing. Action should be initiated to develop alternate fabrics for Air Force uniforms which utilize 100% synthetic fiber or contain a high ratio of synthetic to wool fibers. (Author)
