The Social Impact on a Community Resulting from a Military Base Closure (Bellefontaine, Ohio).
Abstract
The legal implications of base-community relationships have focused Air Force attention on efforts to determine what factors affect local communities when military installations are opened, closed, or subjected to significant mission changes. There are numerous aspects of the quality of life in a community which could be studied to determine the potential for environmental impact. This study is directed at identifying social indicators associated with civil information sources which exist in public records or which are readily obtained from commercial enterprises dealing in services to the public. The objective of the study focused on the capability to gather supportable evidence that will enable subsequent research teams to develop a model for predicting the social impact of a military base closure. After reviewing the records of the community of Bellefontaine, Ohio, the authors conclude that civil data sources are available and are in fact a matter of public record. An attempt was made to assess the information obtained for any indication of an impact on the community resulting from the closure of Bellefontaine Air Station in 1969. The thesis constitutes a viable approach to addressing the social impact assessment of a community in association with a military installation. (Author)
