Rare Earth Ion-Host Lattice Interactions. 9. Lanthanides in YAsO4

Abstract

Phenomenological even-fold crystal field parameters, B(km) for D(2d) site symmetry are determined that yield a least-rms deviation of 6.7 cm between calculated and measured energy levels for Er(3+) in YAsO4. Crystal field components, A(km), are determined by a sum over the YAsO4 lattice, and B(km) are then calculated for the lanthanides in this material. These parameters are used to calculate Stark split energy levels and squared-matrix elements of the electric dipole operator between the energy states for the triply ionized lanthanides in YAsO4.
