Army Life-Support Power Source System (ALPSS) for Environmental Control of Casualty Holding and Evacuation Bag.

Abstract

An improved casualty holding and evacuation bag heating system for hypothermia prevention and treatment was developed. The system is comprised of a liquid loop tubulated linear and a battery-less catalytic power source. The power source burns a fuel (propylene in this case) catalytically to generate heat and electricity. A liquid is heated and recirculated through the liner in the bag. The system is capable of delivering in excess of 250 watts (853 Btu/hr) heat into the bag which is more than adequate to maintain the casualty comfortably warm at -50F (-45.6C).
