Leadership and Social Exchange Processes.

Abstract

Leadership as a field of investigation is reviewed with attention to its place as an influence process. Consideration is given to elements of social exchange in leadership, three types being identified: the transactional, dealing most directly with leader-follower exchanges of reward in the aggregate; system progress, involving the input-output effectiveness of the group or organization in the task environment seen, as locomotion toward a goal; and individual enhancement, concerning the follower's sense of equity, justice, and personal achievement, within the broader collective goal or goals.
