Extended Case Liner Bond Analysis.

Abstract

This report documents results of a 12-month study program to develop parametric design and analysis curves for case bond stresses in rocket motor models with domes. In a previous study, parametric curves were developed for case bond stresses in flat-ended cylinders. In this study, 2-D (axisymmetric) parametric stress solutions were obtained for domed motor configurations. The parametric solutions from the previous-flat-ended cylinder study were combined to form a structural analysis handbook chapter, intended for inclusion in the JANNAF Solid Propellant Structural Integrity Handbook. For the domed motor analyses, stress solutions were obtained for thermal shrinkage, internal pressure, and axial acceleration loading. Parametric stress solutions were obtained for web fractions between 0.5 and 0.8, and length-to-diameter ratios between 1 and 5. The analysis models all assumed symmetry about the axial mid-plane of the motor. The grain was considered to be fully bonded to the case, with short end flaps, for some solutions and flapped to the case tangent line in other solutions. For L/D = 1.0 and W/b = 0.8, additional dome bonding lengths were studied.
