Fine Scale Radio Studies of the Sun.

Abstract

Major flare eruptions in solar active regions create geophysical disturbances that may seriously disrupt Air Force communication and surveillance systems. Preliminary interferometric observations of the Sun by the principal investigator revealed significant changes in the fine scale structure of the region hours in advance of a flare eruption. The present contractual effort sought to confirm this vital observation and to obtain more information on the small-sized flare trigger sources that could be applied in a reliable flare forecast technique.
