Improvements and Modifications to the Epsilon/AFGL Balloon-Borne Sub-Micron Particle Counter.

Abstract

Several improvements and modifications have been incorporated in the device which greatly facilitate preparation of the equipment for flight and pre-flight calibration. Notable among these is a means which has been developed for relieving microstresses in the magnetic recording tape which had been troublesome in the past. Also corrected was a slight discontinuity in the pulse height binning process which had proven to be elusive in the past due to its intermittency. An investigation was conducted which established the feasibility of working with reduced forward scattering angles. This in turn permits in much more compact optical system to be designed. (Author)
