A Gravitational Potential for Atmospheric Earth Tides Caused by the Sun,

Abstract

A potential function is presented for the force by which the atmospheric tide bulge acts on the orbits of artificial earth satellites. The tidal bulge is assumed to be caused by the combined effect of solar heating and solar mass attraction. The semidiurnal term as well as the diurnal term are considered. The potential is intended for use with computer programs for satellite geodesy.
