727/JT8D Jet and Fan Noise Flight Effects Study.

Abstract

A study was conducted to define specific ground-to-flight effects on the noise of a low-bypass-ratio engine. The analysis was based on acoustic data recorded during the FAA-sponsored 727 Noise Retrofit Feasibility Program. Two configurations, a baseline and an ejector suppressor nacelle, were included in the study. Noise flight effects were obtained by comparing JT8D ground static and 727/JT8D flight acoustic data. Procedures are defined for normalizing static and flight data to common conditions. The analysis considered both jet and fan noise characteristics for five engine power settings. The results of this study will provide a guideline for establishing flight effects technology. (Author)
