S-3A Graphite/Epoxy Spoiler Fabrication of Ten Shipsets and Damage Repair Study.

Abstract

Contract No. N62269-75-C-0428 initiated in July 1975 authorized two basic tasks: fabrication of 10 shipsets of composite spoilers on a production basis as a follow-on to the prior four-shipset contract N62269-74-C-0629; and an adjunct damage criteria and repair technique study. This report describes the performance for each of these tasks. The four-shipset fabrication effort previously performed for subsequent flight evaluation of these spoilers was described by report NADC-75217-30. (The results of the flight evaluation are described in NATC Report AT-TR-76 dated 30 March 1976.) Fabrication data previously submitted in report NADC-75217-30 has therefore been omitted, where feasible, with only Engineering, Tooling, and Manufacturing improvement changes described within this report. The most significant production change consisted of using an expendable pattern approach for lay up and cut out of the composite material. A reduction in lay-up time and materials waste as well as improved parts quality were thereby realized. Cost comparison data for various quantities of composite versus metal spoilers based on this production contract are included.
