Armament Monograph-Origin of a Technology Base for U. S. Military Pyrotechnics.

Abstract

In summary fashion, the monograph traces the historical development of a technology base for military pyrotechnics within the US Army from the period after WWI to the first deliberate and conscious decision in 1950 to initiate and support a structured program for the establishment of a sound scientific and engineering foundation for pyrotechnics. Also presented is the methodology used to break down the field of Military Pyrotechnics into its primary areas of engineering, chemistry, physics, and instrumentation. Presented within these areas are their component and subcomponent specialties, parameters, characteristics, and other elements and considerations perceived as necessary to assess the state of knowledge in the field as well as the needs and priorities for future investigations. Research and development problem areas were also noted. The assessments and problem areas then served as the basis for the formulation of detailed scopes of work for basic and applied research including experimental and analytical projects and tasks for in-house laboratory performance, accomplishment at other government laboratories and/or placement on contract. The actual examples of such scopes of work prepared in 1951 and 1952 could not be located 25 years later and are not presented.
