'Lightning War' in Manchuria: Soviet Military Analysis of the 1945 Far East Campaign,

Abstract

The Paper presents the initial results of a survey of Soviet military literature on the short but decisive campaign that the Soviets waged against Japanese forces in Manchuria in August 1945. The Paper is a guide to the rich material discovered, it identifies the lessons that Soviet analysts infer from the campaign for possible application to modern military operations, whether in the Far East or elsewhere. Its exposition of these lessons is organized according to elements in the campaign effort, ranging from plan conceptualization to the missions of the individual forces. Additionally, the author has combined the statements and concepts contained in the Soviet literature in a hypothetical model for a strategically decisive initial phase of war. The Paper also supplies a Bibliography of over 100 Soviet entries utilized for this survey, and an Appendix listing the major commanders of the Soviet forces in the campaign.
