Teleseismic Verification of Data Exchange Yields

Abstract

This report addresses the possibility of directly inverting teleseismic ground motion in order to obtain explosion yield. The procedure proposed for accomplishing the inversion is to employ a deterministic model which predicts ground motion from a nuclear explosion. This procedure makes use of the information expected from data exchange packages that provide information on the near explosion source environment. Additional parameters must be inferred from other sources or determined by experiment on geophysical analogues. Three major topics discussed in this report are: equivalent elastic source calculations for a wide range of rock types; the teleseismic amplitude dependence on the source, including the effects of the free surface reflected phase, and the effect of upper mantle elastic properties on short period P waves.
