Metatropic Materials; A Theory for Permanent Memory Effects.

Abstract

This sets forth a 3-dimensional theory of permanent memory effects, metatropic materials, applicable to heterogeneous solids. The change in the value of the various moduli as well as the changes in the isotropy group, i.e. crystal class, of the stress response caused by a past sequence of strain histories is given a general structure. The nature and sign of the residual stresses, permanent set, and the isotropy group are deduced from an operational definition of metatropic effects. These include damage effects, strain hardening, and aging.
