Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Electron Binding Energies of Water Adsorbed on Alpha-Alumina.

Abstract

Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (HeI radiation) have been obtained for a partially hydroxylated surface of single crystal alpha-alumina (0001) and for water chemisorbed on this surface at 298K. Model calculations using the SCF-X alpha-Sw method have also been performed and, with their aid, the features of the partially hydroxylated spectra have been assigned. Spectral features associated with additional hydration at 298K are consistent with the adsorption of strongly bound molecular water. (Author)
