Equipment for Applying Plasma Arc-Hot Wire Welded Overlays on Projectile Bodies for Rotating Bands,

Abstract

This report deals with the design and construction of a production type plasma arc-hot wire (PAHW) banding machine. The machine was constructed under contract and employs the PAHW process to apply ferrous or nonferrous overlays for rotating bands to large caliber projectiles. The machine is also equipped with a projectile chucking and rotating mechanism, loading and unloading station, oscillator mechanism, power supplies, appropriate timing (programming) and machine controls, and projectile and torch assembly cooling systems.
