Design and Development of Soft X-Ray Laser

Abstract

Progress in the theoretical and experimental effort of the soft x-ray laser work is outlined. The lithium vapor model has been refined to include the effects of autoionization and the stimulated Raman gain of the laser system has been correctly calculated. A single order pulse from the mode locked train of CO2 pulses has been isolated and is ready to be injected into the 'Big Bang' laser for amplification. The experimental chamber, a vacuum system and focusing optics is complete and the grazing incidence spectrometer is assembled. A dye laser system tuned to 9584 A has been built and tested.
