Cook-off Studies of 30 mm DEFA Practice Ammunition,

Abstract

The critical temperature of the DEFA practice round, and the cook-off time as a function of the temperature of the gun's breech cylinder have been calculated. These predications were obtained with a code that numerically solves the one-dimensional heat flow equation and measured values of the Arrhenius parameters and the thermal diffusivity of the propellant. The calculations have been done for both the French and the equivalent Australian propellants and it was found that with respect to cook-off there is no significant difference between the two propellants.
