Evaluation of a Remote Weather Radar Display. Volume I. Development and Field Tests.

Abstract

A two-month test of a weather radar data link between the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) and the Federal Aviation Administration Flight Service Station (FSS) at Oklahoma City has demonstrated usefulness of contoured displays for pilot briefing. The weather equipment is described and examples of the displays are discussed, with comments of NSSL meteorologists and FSS pilot briefers. This research is divided in two parts. Volume I describes the installation of equipment, training of FSS briefers in operation and interpretation, and documentation of data transmitted during the tests. Volume II summarizes research efforts at NSSL to computerize further processing of the displayed data for rapid isolation and tracking of selected storms. (Author)
