300 Meter Sonobuoy Cable 500 Meter Tow Cable.

Abstract

The following conclusions have been reached as a result of the efforts of the sonobuoy/tow cable development program: (1) low loss optical fibers can be successfully integrated into undersea cables with low enough attenuation to meet Navy operational requirements; (2) techniques used for the protection of the optical fibers such as plastic jacketing and armoring are applicable to a wide range of cables for both undersea and atmospheric uses; and (3) since the sonobuoy and tow cables were produced by conventional cable manufacturing techniques, it is expected that they can be fabricated in lengths equal to that of conventional cables.
