Dental Care Requirements of Active Duty Army Personnel.
Abstract
United States Army Dental resources are allocated to installations based on assigned military strength without regard for dental needs. The purpose of this study was to determine the dental treatment requirements of active duty Army personnel by mean-years-of-service of 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 years, age, sex, and military rank status. Surveys were conducted at 42 Army installations in the Continental United States using month of birth as the selection criterion for inclusion in the sample. Treatment plans were developed for more than 13,000 personnel. Numbers and types of dental treatments needed have been converted to hours required to perform the care. Sample distributions were determined for 17 treatment categories and for missing teeth. Mean hours of care for the entire sample is 8.5 hours with 97.5 percent of the sample requiring some form of dental care.
