SEAFARER Site Survey, Upper Michigan Region. Book 17. Cultural and Recreational Data.

Abstract

Many gaps remain in the knowledge of the early history of the Upper Peninsula region. Many areas in the western part have not been investigated and the chance for the discovery of archeological remains which would shed light on the early history exists. However, manpower requirements for an adequate survey are unmanageable. Initially, fur trapping and trading played a major role in the discovery of the region. Later nineteenth century mining and lumbering operations provided the impetus for the influx of European immigrants and the development of thriving communities. Tourism and recreation in the area rely heavily upon the appeal of available woods and aquatic resources. Increases in regional metropolitan area populations coupled with more buying power and mobility have placed higher demands on existing recreation facilities. (Author)
