Chemical Analysis for Chitin as a Measure of Fungal Infiltration of Cellulosic Materials.

Abstract

A chemical test method is described for indicating an early stage of fungus infiltration of cellulosic materials. The test method is based on mechanical separation (sonification) of fungus growth present in and on cellulosic materials and on the chemical analysis of chitin, a polymer of N-acetylglucosamine, which is a cell-wall constituent of most fungi.
