Feasibility Study for an Automated Digitized Document Storage, Retrieval and Transmission System (ADDSRTS).

Abstract

This study assesses the technology and availability of equipment for providing an automated storage, retrieval and transmission system for engineering drawings by converting them into a digitized data stream. The following conclusions are drawn from this study: (1) An Advanced Mass Store is important to the entire electronic data store industry and should be strongly supported; (2) An automated storage, retrieval and transmission system is practicable; (3) The technology is available for such a system; and (4) Two major items of equipment, however, are not commercially available at this time--(a) An inputting device to read engineering drawings or microfilm of engineering drawings; and (b) An outputting device to reconstruct the image on film for contract data packages. The study reviews technologies, equipment, requirements for implementation, and an economic analysis of a system for the Naval Ordnance Station, Louisville.
