Cross Sections for Thermal Reactions between Uranium Atoms and Atmospheric Species.

Abstract

Experimental studies of associative ionization reactions involving uranium and other metal atoms in collisions with O1O2 and other atmospheric species are described. Absolute reaction cross sections are obtained by comparison with the previously measured cross sections for the U + O and U + O2 reactions. Negative ions have been observed as products in some of the reactions however these channels account for less than 10% of the total reaction cross section. No reaction products are observed for associative ionization between atomic oxygen and selected oxides of Mo, W and Ti. Both thorium and uranium have large total cross sections of order 10 to the -15 power sq. cm., for associative ionization with ozone. A simple, efficient ozone source for beam experiments is described. (Author)
