In Search of the National Purpose.

Abstract

In this research memorandum, the author separates and analyzes the principal external and domestic ingredients of the US national purpose. National security is viewed as a means of giving us the opportunity to pursue our goals, rather than an end in itself. The author concludes that the concept of a national purpose is a valid one, relevant as a kind of litmus paper against which contemporary controversial issues can be tested, and necessarily involving the reconciliation of pragmatic and idealistic tensions.
