Sign Changes of Linear Combinations of Derivatives and Convolutions of Polya Frequency Functions,

Abstract

Upper bounds on the number of sign changes of linear combinations of derivatives and convolutions of Polya frequency functions are obtained using the variation diminishing properties of totally positive functions. These constitute extensions of earlier results of Karlin.
