Disposal Study (Tires and Other Polymeric Materials)

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of various methods of tire disposal. Over thirty processes for the disposal of tires and their interrelationships were investigated. The following four promising process alternatives involving combinations of these processes were recommended for further investigation: (a) Mechanical shearing followed by incineration. (b) Landfill after mechanical shearing. (c) Use in asphalt substances after the combined size reduction processes (mechanical shredding followed by cryogenic shredding). (d) Selling the by-products of the combined size reduction processes.
