Program Debugging Using COBOL 74,

Abstract

This technical paper discusses the Debugging features of COBOL 74 (American National Standard Programming Language COBOL X3.23-1974). The formal COBOL specificationsup until COBOL 74 totally ignored the problem of debugging programs at the source level. This paper discusses some of the methods by which the various vendors who produce COBOL compilers attempted to break the problem by providing language extensions to their compilers. It goes into the COBOL 74 debugging features in great detail as well as provides numerous examples of using debug lines in the source code debug procedures in the Declarative portion of the source program.
