Coastal Characteristics and Their Effect on Tanker Discharge Operations.
Abstract
A study has been made of three uncontrollable variables which influence the location and utility of military tanker mooring and discharge systems installed in support of military operations. The variables are: near shore gradient, current velocity, and environmental factors. Present mooring and discharge systems are found to be far from universal in their suitability for use off worldwide coastlines, a shortcoming which could periodically constrain the Tactical Commander's selection of terrain objectives. An advanced generation mooring and discharge system is proposed which appears well within the state of the art. The advanced system would increase coverage of worldwide landing beaches significantly, while simultaneously increasing the probability of being able to transfer fuel on a given day via an advanced system installed previously.
