Reseaux d'Antennes Controles par Ordinateur (Computer-Controlled Antenna Arrays).
Abstract
These antenna arrays, constructed at Defense Research Establishment Ottawa and installed in the Electronic Countermeasures simulation laboratory, allow the evaluation of the vulnerability of the military radar used in the laboratory. There are three antenna arrays, of which the principal array includes rows 1 to 6 inclusive (48 elements). Following that there is row 7 which is inserted at the centre of the wall of the anechoic chamber. Finally there is row 0 positioned at the bottom of the wall of the anechoic chamber mainly to simulate ground clutter. This system of antennas can be controlled either manually or by computer. The simulations obtainable with this system greatly enhance our capabilities; such as simulating an aircraft moving horizontally and vertically, a blooming chaff cloud, ground clutter and angle deception jamming. The simplicity of design, the low cost, and the interchangeability of antennas without the necessity for readjustment contribute to the success of the antenna arrays. The microstrip antennas, which have been developed in the laboratory, are appropriate for such antenna arrays. These antennas also have been designed for transmitting at microwave frequencies. The band of operation of the system is from 8.5 to 9.5 GHz, while the variation in radiated power between elements does not exceed + or - 1.6 dB and the variation in phase does not exceed + or - 9 deg.
