Estimation of Relative Esterification Rates by Gas Chromatography as an Aid in the Identification of Fatty Acids.

Abstract

A simple and convenient method is described for estimating the relative esterification rates of unknown fatty acids, HCl catalyzed in methanol. All that is essential is a reasonably quantiative chromatographic procedure for resolving a set of acids and their methyl esters. Satisfactory estimates are obtained from acids with relative rates greater than 0.001 where the relative rate of a normal acid is 1.00. With a slight modification, relative rates of slower reacting acids can be adequately determined. (Author)
