Fracture Mechanics Design Methodology

Abstract

Many problems in the aerospace field that are concerned with new high-strength materials, flow susceptibility, stress corrosion, non-destructive testing, fractographic material examination, crack propagation and residual strength aspects of the fatigue of aircraft structures, and brittle fracture, require that fracture mechanics concepts be made available to the engineer and designer. The purpose of this Meeting was to present examples of how fracture mechanics is used in the design of aircraft structures and their components. In addition to practical examples being emphasized, gaps of knowledge required by the designer were identified. The presentations and subsequent discussions will provide a contribution to the Design Manual on 'Fracture Mechanics Design of Aircraft Structures' being prepared by AGARD.
