Definition of 'Active Fault'.

Abstract

The term active fault has had a long, well-established usage among engineering geologists and seismologists. Despite many shades of meaning in the definitions, the term signifies offsets during geologically recent time, association with earthquakes, and probability or portential for recurrence of these events. The term would benefit from a commonly accepted definition. Capable fault has a more restricted meaning as defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. (Author)
