Rare Earth Ion-Host Lattice Interactions 7. Lanthanides in YVO4.

Abstract

Phenomenological even-fold crystal-field parameters, Bkm, have been found that give a least rms deviation of 2.6/cm between 24 calculated and measured energy levels of the ground term of Nd(3+) in YOV4. These Bkm are in close agreement with those that yield a least rms deviation of 8.5/cm between 52 calculated and measured energy levels for Nd(3+) and with values reported previously that were calculated by the use of a different free-ion Hamiltonian. A smooth set of Bkm(Ln) for all the lanthanides in YVO4 were then obtained by multiplying the previously reported Bkm(Nd) values in YVO4 by the Bkm (Ln)/Bkm (Nd) ratios found for the lanthanides in YPO4 (more experimental data were available for computing Bkm for the lanthanides in YPO than for YVO4). Crystal-field components, Akm, were determined by a sum over the YVO4 lattice. These Akm were used with appropriate Bkm, radial integrals, and energy positions of the higher electronic configurations to calculate squared matrix elements of the electric dipole operator between the Stark split energy states of the ground configuration for the triply ionized lanthanides in YVO4.
