Abstract

The purpose of this report is to appraise overall problems and needs of water and related land resources and the potentials for development in the Ohio River Basin. The water problems analyzed include (1) floodwater and sediment damage to crops, rural lands and urban areas; (2) impaired drainage of agricultural lands; (3) agricultural drought problems and irrigation requirements; and (4) water needs for livestock, rural domestic use, recreation, fish and wildlife, and forest based industries. Inventories and analyses of potential water and related land resource developments in upstream watersheds, including storage and cost estimates are presented for subbasins. The report includes projections for the years 1980, 2000 and 2020, based on expected population growth and economic development. The projections are for agriculture output, timber production, and land use - including strip mines, land treatment, and employment. These projections are shown for the entire Basin and for each of the economic subareas. The report translates the analyses of the economic projections into needs for water and related land resources. Water supply and quality as well as the availability of related land resources are discussed in the section on present status of water resource developments. Unsatisfied needs and problems with their possible solutions are shown for the current, 1980, 2000, and 2020 time periods. (Author)
